Day 2 – Christchurch to Franz Josef
Included Accommodation: Rainforest Retreat (or similar)
Today we travel from coast to coast right over the Southern Alps passing through the Arthur’s Pass National Park, one of the most scenic drives in New Zealand. Arthurs Pass is a landscape of two halves, along the eastern side we’ll venture through riverbeds and beech forest, and on the western side deeply gorged rivers and dense rainforest. Along this road, we will stop off at the Devil’s Punch Bowl and the breath-taking Castle Hill. We arrive to Franz Josef in the afternoon, home to the Franz Josef glacier - a spectacular 5km long glacier. You’ll have two days here to unwind in Rainforest Retreat and visit the Franz Josef glacier.
- Walk the Castle Hill track
- Devils Punchbowl waterfalls
- Enjoy a pizza dinner at Rainforest Retreat
Day 3 – Franz Josef Free Day

Incredible Franz Josef sits in the world heritage area, and the combination of alpine scenery and west coast rainforest makes for an epic setting for your free day. Immerse yourself in a unique opportunity today - carving your own Pounamu (Greenstone) jewellery. You’ll learn more about the cultural significance of pounamu as you engage in this authentic cultural experience and depart with your own special piece of Aotearoa New Zealand.
You’ll then get to explore the Franz Josef glacier, an ever-changing landscape of ice. Opt for the Heli-Hike adventure, allowing you to walk on top of the glacier itself. For a free option, walk through the rainforest to a viewing area where the icy wonderland lies just 750m away.

- The Brownston Wanaka (or similar from 01 November 2026 - 30 April 2027)

We start the day off with a trip to the Franz Josef wildlife centre (included) where you can see the largest kiwi incubation and hatching facility on the South Island. You are guaranteed to see a live kiwi inside the open nocturnal house, as well as Tuatara, a reptile only found in New Zealand. Afterwards we head to Lake Matheson for a refreshing walk around the lake known for its perfect mirror reflection of Aoraki Mt Cook and the Southern Alps. The waters of Lake Matheson are dark brown, so on a calm day they create the ideal reflective surface, and by a happy coincidence, the mountains to the east are perfectly positioned to reflect in the lake. We'll then cruise up the last stretch of Highway 6, stopping at popular scenic spots along the way, and onwards to Lake Hawea. Lake Hawea is an outdoor adventurer’s paradise and a great place to swim, kite surf, kayak, bike, walk or just laze about on the lake’s edge.

But before we get to Queenstown, we'll first stop in Wanaka; a resort town set on the southern end of its namesake lake with views of snow capped mountains. It's the gateway to the Southern Alps' Mount Aspiring National Park, a wilderness of glaciers, beech forests and alpine lakes. Make sure to check out #ThatWanakaTree and snap a pic of one of the most photographed trees in the world! Next up we’ll visit the world’s first commercial bungy site – The Kawarau Bridge. Only the bravest travellers will dare to sign up for this iconic bucket list bungy! What should I pack?
Depending on where in Australia or New Zealand you decide to visit, your luggage will vary. For exact information please visit the "What to bring" section of each tour page.
What immunisations do I need?
For the latest information on immunisations, we strongly recommend you or contact the Travellers Medical and Vaccination Centre (www.traveldoctor.com.au) to discuss health requirements for your trip. They will advise you about appropriate inoculations.
Do I need to take any medical supplies?
It is not necessary to bring any medical supplies other than any personal items you may require. Each tour will carry an first aid box and our guides are all certified in First Aid.
How much luggage can I take?
We don't have an exact policy when it comes to luggage though we just ask our customers to be mindful that we have limited space. Generally we recommend people to bring a large backpack/suitcase with all their gear and another smaller backpack to keep on the bus and hold their daily items ( phone, water bottle, towel, sunscreen etc ) and which they used to take on walks etc. If you have a lot of luggage is best to leave the things you don't need at your hotel/hostel where they will store it for free.
Where can I store my luggage whilst on tour?
During the tour your main luggage will be stored in our trailer. This trailer is always locked however we cannot guarantee the complete safety of your gear from theft or damage. This is why it is so important to purchase a good travel insurance. If you need to store your luggage whilst away on tour, this can be done through your accommodation. Most hostel and hotels will store your luggage safely free of charge.
Will I be able to do any laundry whilst on tour?
For camping tours there will be no time to do laundry. However, for longer cross country tours involving hostel or hotel style accommodation you may have the opportunity to wash your clothes.
Do I need a sleeping bag?
For all camping tours require you to have a sleeping bag. If you don't have one they may be available for hire via the "join tour" button.
How fit do I need to be?
Our tours are made to be fun, informative and active and can be enjoyed by anyone with a moderate degree of fitness and agility. Travellers should be comfortable with hiking/walking up to 5km each day.
Do I need travel insurance?
Insurance is important in protecting visitors from loss or damange of goods, medical problems, cancelation by passengers or other casualties. Its highly recommended. Some tours on this website require you to have travel insurance. If you are Australian then it is not necessary.
Can I get online whilst travelling?
For tours incorporating hostel/hotel style accommodation you may have the opportunity to use wireless internet or use of nearby internet cafe. If you have a mobile plan with internet then that should be ok except for more remote regions. This will vary from tour to tour so please contact us directly for more accurate information.
Will I be able to use my mobile whilst on tour?
You can use your mobile while touring in Australia or New Zealand, but coverage may be limited in remote areas. For best connectivity, consider purchasing a local SIM card or an international roaming plan.

Can I just do a section of this tour and not the whole trip?
Unfortunately it is not possible to only do a part of the tour. Passengers generally need to stay with the tour from start to finish. However, drop off locations at the end of the tour made me negotiated.
Does the tour price include flights?
No. Tour prices do not include any travel arrangements other than for the duration of the tour itself. If you need assistance with booking flights or buses our travel team and certainly help - Just ask!
How far in advance do I need to book my tour?
As a rule of thumb we generally say AT LEAST 2 weeks prior to departure, this will usually get you a seat on the date you want. That being said, we cannot guarantee that spaces will be available at the time of your booking so, if you can, book as soon as possible. Bookings can still be made right up until the departure date of the tour if seats are available. If you know when you'd like to travel, please contact us and we will let you know if you need to book soon or if you have time.

Who travels with us
Is this tour for me?
Our tours are made up of small groups with a range of different ages, nationalities and backgrounds. Generally people who travel with us are between 20 and 49, though we also get alot passengers much older onboard - everyone is welcome! On tour we get equally as many males as females and everyone shares an enthusiasm for the out doors, nature, adventure and culture. Our tours are for those wanting to really explore and share the experience with likeminded travellers. Whether we are camping by a billabong in Kakadu National Park or sharing a cabin in Tasmania, our travellers want more than just a site seeing tour. They are chasing a hands on group experience. The trips are packed with many highlights and the pace can be fast. There may be some long drives and passengers should expect to help out when setting up camp or cooking food - this is a group adventure. However, there’s always time to chill out, have a cold beer ( or wine! ) and soak up your surroundings. As always, if in doubt then contact us directly with your concerns.
Cost and Fees
What does "Paid Locally" mean?
Some tours require you to pay national park fees directly, in cash, to the tour guide on the morning of departure. Rest assured this will be subtracted from the tour price when reserving your tour.
Will I need additional money?
Visitors are advised to bring some cash as ATMs and banks can be few and far between depending on where we are during the trip. Its handy to have some extra cash as we do stop by local shops and cafe.
Do I need to tip our guide?
If you had an amazing time on tour and wish to tip the guide, then that is completely up to you. However, tipping is not customary and is not at all expected.
Are there any hidden fees I need to know about?
Our tour prices are completely transparent. There are no additional fees involved that are not included in the overall tour price shown. If you wish to do optional activities such as helicopter rides or wildlife safaris, then an extra cost may be needed. However, this will always be made clear at the time of your booking.
Whilst on tour
Can I book extra accommodation for the start and end of the tour?
We know our country inside and out and would be happy to give you good recommodations. Please contact us for recommendations.
Where do I meet the tour?

“What an amazing trip! !”
ROB and aura are the best at the kiwi crawl #goats
“Great experience. ”
Had a really good time on the South Island hop on hop off. Such a great way to meet people. Couldn't have asked for a better bus driver/tour guide than Taff, he was really friendly and engaging. Only downside is that there are very few buses in winter so some places feel very rushed. There should be a discount for winter timetables.
“Enjoyed every minute made our NZ travel easy and enjoyable.”
Brilliant time with Kiwi Experience. Was really simple and helpful our driver Kelvin was always on time and willing to answer any questions we had.
“I had the most amazing time on the Kiwi Experience GOAT small gr”
Ahu as a driver and tour guide was knowledgeable and passionate about New Zealand and its culture. He consistently went above and beyond to ensure we were getting as much out of the tour as possible. The locations we visited were beautiful and we covered a lot of ground while still gaining the full effect of each place. The activities (both optional and included) allowed for a very comprehensive New Zealand experience with something for everyone.
“Really recommend this!”
I did the North Island highlights, and the drivers were amazing, organisation fantastic, and I loved that it did feel more like a tour than just transport. Our drivers took us to lots of extra places, and gave us lots of facts about where we were. Also good value for money (though still objectively expensive). A great way for solo travellers to get around New Zealand, and meet likeminded people!
“Kiwi Experience – Simply Amazing!”
Kiwi Experience was hands down the best road trip I've ever done! The buses are super comfy, and you can customize your trip however you like. Stay as long as you want at the coolest spots – total freedom! The drivers are incredible. Our bus driver was not just a driver but a total legend! He was super chill, always telling us awesome stories and giving us insider tips about the places we were visiting. It felt like having a local friend showing us around – his energy and enthusiasm made the trip even better. Plus, the way he handled the long drives with a smile on his face was impressive. He really went above and beyond to make the experience special for everyone. The places we visited – WOW! From hikes and glaciers to hidden beaches and Queenstown adventures, it was all there. Plus, you get to meet so many cool people from all over the world. What impressed me the most: Everything is totally stress-free! Kiwi Experience takes care of everything, so you can just sit back and enjoy. Final verdict: If you want to explore New Zealand, Kiwi Experience is a must! Unforgettable and highly recommended.
“Very good times!”
Just completed an 8 day tour of the north island (North Island Revive) as a small group. I can honestly say it was some of the best times of my life. Tina our guide was absolutely incredible and did an amazing job. I met some amazing people who I'm sure will be lifetime friends and went to some outstanding places. I cannot recommend kiwi experience more from my personal experience. Thank you so much for everything. I will absolutely return and do a trip on the south Island in the future. Absolutely perfect for solo travellers like myself and to meet other like minded people and do fun activities.
“Highly recommend!”
Just finished my small group tour with Kiwi Experience and had an amazing amazing time! It was so nice to have everything planned already, especially being new to solo travel. Everywhere we went was beautiful and every optional activity I booked was absolutely worth it. The trip was jam packed but we still had a good amount of downtime. Big kudos to our driver Ricky for making the experience that much better.
“Thank you”
I have just finished the Southern Kiwi Small group tour and couldn’t speak more highly of it! The days were full of activities ranging from Nature walks to Adrenaline activities! For a first trip as a solo traveler I felt this trip was so comforting knowing that I didn’t have to plan anything and I would still get to see some amazing places. A big shoutout to Ricky for his commentary and advice to anything we had questions about!!
“Highly recommend it.”
The kiwi experience was absolutely brilliant and best way to get around New Zealand. Our bus driver lightening ⚡️made our trip! He was knowledgeable, funny and willing to answer questions we had.
“You won’t regret it”
Had the best time and Cowboy was amazing!
“Fantastic Experience”
Amazing tour!!
“A good way to meet other people if travelling alone.”
Fantastic experience, a great way to fit in lots of activities and see lots of different places in New Zealand in a short space of time. The drivers are very helpful and informative and everything is very easy.
“Very well done! ”
Amazing team and Experience. Kiwi are the best way to know all NZ
“Our tourguide was very friendly and supporting us all”
It was very exciting and interessting to lern about the Maori culture, to get a feeling and have contact to the people. The alpine hiking was an other highlight and also the other activities like black water rafting. .
“Would highly recommend”
Had such an incredible time with Kiwi Experience and met some friends for life.
“Wonderful trip”
Honestly didn't know what to expect, but actually had one of the best holidays I have ever had. Great for super adventurous people and those who like to take it slow as its completely up to you which activities you choose to participate in, and no matter what you do you never feel like you're missing out as the driver always has multiple options. If you like meeting and really getting to know new people too, there really is no better way to do it. (Also big up Tim he is the best driver).

“I did the 19 day small group tour.”
Did get to see the highlights of new zealand so that was great . The north island part was great, we had a nice van and our tour guide hd a microphone so he could point out things while he was driving. We stayed in 4 bedroom dorms. But when te south part of the tour began it went downhill. We bad to change vans and we got a very crapy old van with no microphone so our guide couldn’t talk to us while he was driving and some seat were very uncomfortable ( even if you were of average hight) . On the south island we often had to stay with 5, 6 and even 7 people in one dorm ( a 4 bedroom dorm was promised) . Also they say they get you the best deals but that is not true . They were asking 200 dollars for milford sound while on a different website it was only 132 dollars. Also our tourguide drove us that day which resulted in the people who were not doing it had nothing to do while a trip to glenorchy was on the itenaray that day. They should have hired a driver for milford. Our tourguide was but he could communicate a bit more about what time we leave or are picked up etc.
“Very good times!”
Wonderful informative and enjoyable group of hosts, tours and guests.
“Amazing day ”
Phil was an amazing tour guide, considering the lack of tour equipment. We were promised a luxury vehicle, definitely not. Only just enough room for the 22 of us, cup holders broken and luggage in the aisle. We were promised a day trip and that was taken away from us due to another option being offered, something too expensive for us,so we lost a day out. The breakfast on two of the days was minimal, not what we expected. The dark sky project that was promised was inside a building in the middle of the day, definitely not as advertised. The company needs to do a complete revamp of its tours and figure stuff out
“ I could not recommend it more highly.”
Our tour was absolutely amazing! Our driver, Cowboy (Jason), was the best driver we could ever dream of having. He did everything he could possibly do to make sure our trip was the best it could be. From all of the natural beauties we found on our lovely walks to the extra activities we did with the amazing professionals.
“Really recommend it”
Absolutely blew my expectations out of the water. Our driver, Jason (Cowboy) was really fantastic at giving us information about areas we were visiting and passing through, and we got really lucky that he was able to fight for us to get access to some activities that were mostly booked up (traveled in November, and many attractions were still working to get back to full staffing capacity). Format of the trip was great for making new friends, which made each view, adventure, and meal all the more fun and worthwhile.
“Perfect day”
It was tons of fun! The people were great! Shout out to Guy for being a fun guide! The only thing that was kind of disappointing was the breakfast options. Pretty limited options and were not the most nutritious which wasn't the end of the world but could have been better.
“Overall very enjoyable and would highly recommend.”
We saw all the highlights of New Zealand and hidden gems thanks to our excellent guide. We made wonderful friends. It was truly wonderful to travel without the stress of planning accomodations, activities, and transport.
“We lucked out with the best weather!”
What an adventure! But, beware of the snoring, the breakfast at Waitomo Valley, and the showers/toilets at the River Lodge! The meal at the River Lodge was spectacular, so you must take the good with the bad.
“Can’t recommend enough”
Loved every minute. Richie was a legend, so gutted for the guys couldn’t have him for the whole South Island too. Definitely do the white water rafting in River…
“Loved this trip, great sights and cultural events!”
Kia Ora Marina, Thank you for leaving such a great review! Glad to hear you had such a good trip with us and enjoyed the beautiful Aotearoa :) All the best for you and your future travels. Kind regards, the Kiwi Experience Team.
