Cradle Mountain – Lake St Clair National Park is a jewel of Tasmanian natural beauty — UNESCO World Heritage-listed for its exceptional beauty, in the heart of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
Accessibility is a challenge for many, especially from Hobart — it's remote, but not out of reach, and once there you'll feel a million miles from modern life.
Yes, it's an early start: we depart at 6am, but you take only what you need for the day — no extra accommodation or packing required. Amazingly, you'll spend more time in the national park than most day or multi-day tours departing from much closer.

A fantastic trip — a long day but well worth it. We had enough time at Cradle Mountain to reach Marion's Lookout and back, which was a great surprise, and the breakfast and dinner stops were perfect. Sam was friendly and professional and the van very comfy. Definitely recommend.

I wanted a tour that was to and from Hobart (so many aren't round-trip), and this was perfect. A great day with clear weather, delicious breakfast and dinner stops, and a challenging but worth-it hike to the lookout. As someone who worries about the bad reviews — I get car-sick, and Sam was very sensitive and accommodating, taking great care of all his guests with well-timed frequent stops. The highlight of my whole trip was pausing to see a cloudless night sky, something I'll never see back in the US. Highly recommend if you want to see Tasmania beyond the city — just do it!

We finished our day with dinner at a country pub. The food was yum yum. I can’t rate Sam highly enough, experienced driver, excellent guide and all round a very nice person.

Communication before the trip was excellent. Sam sent a message a couple of days in advance with the exact pickup time, which made things very smooth. Despite the rain in Hobart, everything went on time, and the vehicle was very comfortable and spacious. Even though I traveled alone, the others in the group were incredibly kind and helpful, so I never felt lonely. Sam made regular stops along the way, keeping the long drive comfortable. Every cafe and restaurant he selected was delicious, and the local owners were so welcoming. When we reached Cradle Mountain, Sam walked with us up to Dove Lake. During the drive, he gave us clear details about the hike, including timelines and major landmarks. He was also incredibly helpful and supportive when I had a fall near the top and had to walk down with a bleeding knee. Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and I highly recommend this tour if you are visiting Hobart!

Sam was great! Pick up time as scheduled as well as drop off. I appreciated the mini stops along the way to help break up the long ride up to Cradle Mountain (and back). Also great breakfast and dinner places. Sam was friendly and amiable and put everyone at ease, and gave a great overview of what we'd expect in the park. We kept to a good timetable but given the length of the tour, it's whats required. Def recommend! We're glad we didn't drive ourselves.

I did the Hobart to Cradle Mountain day tour with Sam and a great group of other travellers. We saw so much of the country in one day, Sam gave us loads of information about the places we stopped in and passed through. The Cradle Mountain hike was fabulous, beautiful scenery, there's a medium level and a more difficult option, something for everyone. I really enjoyed this tour. It's a great way to see lots of Tasmania if you're short on time.

I had a fantastic experience on Sam’s Cradle Mountain tour. The itinerary was really well thought out, with great stops along the way that made the journey just as enjoyable as the destination itself. One highlight was the visit to the cranberry farm—the food there was absolutely delicious and a unique touch to the trip.

An incredible day. Sam is a fantastic guide with a great itinerary — the drive is broken up nicely with stops for coffee, leg stretches, breakfast, pancakes, star gazing and saying hello to an enormous cow called Hercules! He gets you to Cradle Mountain happy and comfortable with plenty of time for a truly superb hike — by far the most beautiful I've ever done. Knowledgeable, friendly and easy to get along with. Highly Recommended — Fantastic Guide and a great day out! We joined the Cradle Mountain tour with Sam and had an excellent experience. First of all, the scenery is breathtaking and we also saw some native animals! The weather changed a few times during the day, but Sam was well prepared and handled everything smoothly. Some guests weren’t dressed warmly enough, and he kindly lent jackets to them. His instructions were always clear, and he had good backup plans - the cafe which we originally were supposed to go to had a power outage but Sam promptly reacted to it and arranged with the other cafe (with excellent food too!) beforehand so that we could be on schedule. For dinner, he did the same and took our orders in advance - highly efficient! +++ Sam was attentive throughout the day and ensured everyone was comfortable . We also appreciated the small local snack he offered — what nice touch it was! Sam is very knowledgeable and shared information at a good pace. He was also responsive on text and punctual. Something that stood out: my husband left his Australian hat in the vehicle. Sam found it, messaged us, and later delivered it to our hotel even though he didn’t have to. We really appreciated that extra effort. Overall, we felt well looked after from start to finish. Highly recommend this tour and Sam as a guide.

This tour didn't feel like 15 hrs! Everything was well planned and there were enough breaks to recover. The size of the group was well chosen too. Sam was great guide, giving us recommendations also for the hikes depending on the weather situations. You can walk by your own pace and fitness level. Thanks a lot. We really recommend this excursion. Sam takes care of all the logistics and makes sure everything runs smoothly, and visiting Cradle Mountain in a single day return from Hobart lets you see another side of Tasmania. We were lucky with the weather — the views wouldn't always be so spectacular — and Sam makes sure the whole group has fun.
“Magical Cradle Mountain (and more) - a tour not to be missed!”
This trip was the highlight of my stay in Tasmania. Sam made the trip enjoyable with safety, friendliness and knowledge. It's the only tour to Cradle Mountain that goes from Hobart and if you don't feel like the drive then this is a must! Especially as this is a small tour.
The journey was made to feel less long by regular breaks along the way. Stopping at the picturesque town of Ross for a bathroom break, time to stretch the legs and grab a coffee. The next stop was Deloraine for breakfast, then another stop at Sheffield for some time to snap some pics of Mount Roland before heading to Cradle Mountain.
On the way back to Hobart we stopped again at Sheffield before heading to Deloraine for dinner. The bus was extremely comfortable with phone charging points, recliner seats.
Overall, great weather throughout the journey. Sam took us on the smaller circuit - Enchanted Garden near Peppers then we as a group did the Dove Lake circuit which was just breathtaking. We then did the Ronnie walk to spot some wombats. We then headed to Peppers Lodge for a refreshment and warm up next to he fire.
I definitely recommend Sam and this tour for those who wish to visit Cradle Mountain, without having to travel to Launceston.

Coming from New Zealand we know what a good rugged, mountainous hiking trail looks and feels like. Cradle Mountain did not disappoint us. Even though we had a rental car, based in Hobart we saw that Sam was offering his day trip and decided to relax a little, enjoy the sights, take in the commentary and embrace the hike to Marion's Lookout. Tasmanian roads are not exactly easy to navigate off the main highways. The day was really fantastic, everything we had hoped for. It was a small group from all around the world, just 9 people, the stops along the way were great, especially the local cafe for lunch and historic pub for dinner. The weather was beautiful. Altogether it made for an amazing day. Thanks Sam, we really enjoyed the whole experience.

“Great Way To Reach Cradle From Hobart”
I went on this experience and it was great time! The drive was gorgeous, had plenty of breaks in scenic areas and cool towns, and the perfect amount of commentary. The drive flew by, and Sam took care of everything. Even though it was stormy, it was still beautiful to experience the Cradle Mountain area. Four hours there flew by. It is one of the best parts of Tasmania, and Sam's tour makes it possible to experience even when staying in Hobart. This was the highlight of my Tasmania trip!

This tour really was great! It's an early start at 6am, but Sam is good enough to pick you up from close to your accommodation, so that definitely helps.
There are some stops along the way (including hearty breakfast) allowing time for photos, and taking in the scenery. Sam himself is very friendly, and the group size is small at ~10 people, so you get to know everyone a bit by the end. We got to Cradle at 10:30, did a rain forest walk, Dove Lake itself at 12:30 pm, and left at 4:30 pm, so a solid 5-6 hours of exploring, with different hiking tracks available. There was also a nice dinner on the way back to Hobart.
For what you get including travel there and back, ticket entry to the mountain, and several hours there, I feel the fee is pretty fair. This tour is best for people with limited time to travel up to Cradle, and if you don't have access to a car. But would definitely recommend it to anyone! Thanks Sam!

This was a great experience for me. I was in Tasmania for the first time and decided to explore the areas in and around Hobart. However, as I love nature, I couldn’t miss out on Cradle Mountain. I joined The Derwent Experience tour up to Cradle Mountain with Sam as our guide and driver last week, and it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, absolutely fantastic! Sam is an incredibly knowledgeable guide and experienced tour operator. With such a big journey packed into a single day, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the drive was surprisingly pleasant and Cradle Mountain was stunning. Soo many wombats! Sam shared some great insights along the way and is an excellent driver. I normally prefer to drive myself and can be pretty cautious when it comes to trusting others behind the wheel, especially on long drives but I was able to fully relax and take in the scenery on the way up and back to Hobart, all in one day! Hands down, this was one of the best drinks tours we’ve ever experienced! Our friendship group has done many drinks tours across different states in Australia, but the one Sam curated for us was truly outstanding. From the moment we started, Sam made us feel welcomed and excited for the day ahead. He drove us to each venue, sharing fascinating stories and local history along the way. We got to see how different distilleries and breweries operate, and of course the unique tasting sessions were incredible. What really stood out was Sam’s genuine passion for what he does. The early start is well worth it to get to Cradle Mountain, which is absolutely spectacular. Sam is extremely knowledgable and has put together an itinerary which takes the trip to some of the most beautiful little towns in Tassie which you otherwise might not venture to. Having a few hours up there is perfect to explore and lose yourself in this natural marvel, although if you want to do some of the harder trails this isn’t for the faint hearted to do in a couple of hours. If you want that then perhaps you might want to stay up there for a few days to properly explore. Would highly recommend this well put together trip for solo travellers, family, friends. Huge thanks to Sam for curating such a special experience to highlight the very best of such a beautiful place!

Sam took great care of us on a huge day out. It was such a pleasure to be picked up and driven to and from Cradle Mountain. It is a tiring day so it's great not to have the hassle of driving. Many guests dosed on the way up and down. The breakfast and dinner stops were fantastic - much more personal than a service station or takeaway option, and the food at both places was amazing. Cradle Mountain itself was spectacular, even though we were there on a cold and rainy day. I travelled with my 16 year old son and it was the perfect solution for us to make the most of the day. From start to finish, my Cradle Mountain day trip from Hobart was nothing short of amazing! Our guide, Sam, was friendly, professional, and incredibly knowledgeable—not only about Cradle Mountain, but also the stunning landscapes and history of Tasmania along the way, where we stopped at beautiful places such as Ross and Deloraine! Plenty of photo opportunities even BEFORE getting to our destination. The drive was long, but very comfortable, with well-timed stops and plenty of local stories that made the journey fly by. Once we arrived, we were given just the right balance of guidance and freedom to explore. Sam runs a tight ship, so everything is perfectly timed! It keeps the momentum going for the group I was with, and I was thankful that I found myself with like-minded strangers who were just as punctual, organised and warm and friendly like our guide! Seemed the universe conspired to give me a memorable birthday trip! Arriving at Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre, Sam conducted a briefing, took us on our first trail where we tasted the incredible freshness of the water from the stream. Once we started our trail proper, the views of Dove Lake, the peaceful forest walks, and spotting wombats in the wild—pure magic! The day I went, it rained and there was a heavy fog. There were also rainbows! What would have been an easy trek became slightly more challenging with the rain, gusty winds and fog. So definitely go prepared - really good pair of comfortable walking shoes (waterproof ones would be best), a good waterproof and windproof jacket, beanie or hoodie, and a warm woolen scarf. Gloves if you’re the type to get really cold. If it rains, take your time, don’t rush. Enjoy the scenery, it’s nothing short of amazing and Brontë-esque, especially with the fog. I gobbled every minute of it. The skies did clear as I approached the “Boat Shed”, the sun came out to say hello and gave me some great shots. What made the experience truly special was the Sam’s passion for the region. You could tell he genuinely loves what he does and it created such a welcoming, relaxed vibe throughout the day. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to experience the raw beauty of Tasmania in the hands of someone who really cares about your experience. Thank you for a day we’ll never forget!

Sam was an amazing host and made sure we had the best experience. When we got to Cradle Mountain there were different options for our day/walk, we went with the more challenging option however the other option also seemed amazing. The places we stopped at on the way there and back were lovely, overall would highly recommend to anyone visiting Tasmania!!

Hobart to Cradle Mountain in a day? Not only it is possible, but it's possible to do comfortably- giving you the option to take in an incredible Tasmanian experience within a limited timeframe, as I had. I went up to Marion's Lookout (and a good bit beyond, which was the best part of my hike). Enjoyed the day immensely. Wombats, platypuses, green rosellas! (The pink robin eludes me still..) Having had a taste, I'll return someday to do the whole Overland Track. Amazing. Sam has structured the day in such a way so as to maximize time at Cradle, with some fine stops along the way for coffee and good grub, too! A winner!

Sam took great care of us on a huge day out. It was such a pleasure to be picked up and driven to and from Cradle Mountain. It is a tiring day so it's great not to have the hassle of driving. Many guests dosed on the way up and down. The breakfast and dinner stops were fantastic - much more personal than a service station or takeaway option, and the food at both places was amazing. Cradle Mountain itself was spectacular, even though we were there on a cold and rainy day. I travelled with my 16 year old son and it was the perfect solution for us to make the most of the day. I had only 3 days in Hobart and decided to have 1 day tour for Cradle Mountain. It was quite far from Hobart but Mr.Sam made my journey very colorful with his knowledge and knowhow. You must go up to Marions lookout to see those absoloutely stunning sceneries of Dove lake. The restaurants for breakfast and dinner were enjoyable. Mr.sam explaned every details for the stops and itinerary whenever possible. Plus he is really good at driving, taking photos. His pronunciation as well as intonation sound comprihensible compare to Aussie’s one as English is not my first language. I would like to recommend.

“A Memorable Day at Cradle Mountain!”
We joined the Derwent Experience Cradle Mountain day trip from Hobart on a memorable day in mid-March, 2025 during a week-long stay in Tasmania. We knew months before our trip that we wanted to visit Cradle Mountain but that we also wanted to use Hobart as our base rather than travel around Tasmania with our luggage. We reached out to Sam more than seven months before our planned visit and he was great in responding quickly and accommodating our dates. Seven months later when it was finally our day to visit Cradle Mountain, we were simultaneously excited and a bit anxious about the 15 hour day ahead of us and whether we indeed could complete the hike that we had planned. As it turned out, the weather was beautiful, we were part of a small and congenial group and the whole experience was just great. Sam thoughtfully incorporated two stops on the way two Cradle Mountain, the first for coffee in Ross (at the Ross Bakery) and the second in Deloraine (at Mumma Buzz Café), both great choices. Once we arrived at Cradle Mountain, he patiently explained our options over a four-five hour period, and accompanied some of us on the initial leg of an exhilarating trek around Dove Lake, where we enjoyed spectacular views of the lake and surrounding mountains. What we most enjoyed was our sense of accomplishment after completing what we would describe as a sometimes easy and sometimes challenging hike. On the return trip Sam scheduled a dinner break at the Empire Hotel in Deloraine which was also very nice. By the time that we arrived back at our hotel, we were a bit tired but also very satisfied with our day trip to Cradle Mountain which, largely thanks to Sam, exceeded our high expectations. We have no hesitation in recommending this day trip from Hobart for those who want to experience the majestic beauty of Tasmania and particularly Cradle Mountain and Dove Lake.
“Highlight of my stay in Tasmania!”
This trip was the highlight of my stay in Tasmania. Sam made the trip enjoyable with safety, friendliness and knowledge. It's the only tour to Cradle Mountain that goes from Hobart and if you don't feel like the drive then this is a must! Especially as this is a small tour.
The journey was made to feel less long by regular breaks along the way. Stopping at the picturesque town of Ross for a bathroom break, time to stretch the legs and grab a coffee. The next stop was Deloraine for breakfast, then another stop at Sheffield for some time to snap some pics of Mount Roland before heading to Cradle Mountain.
On the way back to Hobart we stopped again at Sheffield before heading to Deloraine for dinner. The bus was extremely comfortable with phone charging points, recliner seats.
Overall, great weather throughout the journey. Sam took us on the smaller circuit - Enchanted Garden near Peppers then we as a group did the Dove Lake circuit which was just breathtaking. We then did the Ronnie walk to spot some wombats. We then headed to Peppers Lodge for a refreshment and warm up next to he fire.
I definitely recommend Sam and this tour for those who wish to visit Cradle Mountain, without having to travel to Launceston.

Sam created an incredible, memorable way to see Cradle Mountain from Hobart. As the only provider of a Cradle Mountain day tour from Hobart, we were impressed by the comfort and enjoyment — Sam was knowledgeable about the culture, history, environment and local communities along the way, and his comfortable bus even has phone charging ports for all those photos. Parts of the drive are winding, so those prone to motion sickness should take medication beforehand. The best day trip. Even though it's long, the beautiful route made the time fly, and Sam gave well-timed, mesmerising stops along the way. The beauty of Cradle Mountain and Dove Lake was beyond words, and clear weather was the cherry on top, with amazing, well-maintained trails. Sam ended the trip by showing us the best view of the stars.
Sam is a terrific guide — prompt, professional and polite, arriving at the precise time he says. He knows everything about Cradle Mountain and is very knowledgeable. Yes, it's a long day, but Sam fills it with history and stories, and gives you rest time in the van (his 'snooze cruise'). Truly one of the best guides you'll ever meet.

Fantastic, breathtaking sights on the road trip and from the Cradle Mountain peaks, along with the lakes and birdlife. The hike was intense but good exercise, and it was lovely seeing wombats up close. Our guide was a little late in the morning (running slightly over at the end), but made up for it with free coffee, and the trip still went fantastically. Waking up early for this was so worth it!

The Hobart to Cradle Mountain tour was absolutely fantastic! Sam had everything perfectly planned and thought out. Breaks were timed just right, I was able to sleep and rest in the morning, great music after breakfast. The restaurants were great. The van was also super comfortable, with reclining seats and charging ports for added convenience. We were able to spot around 20 wombats with up close encounters, along with wallabies, a pademelon, and even a platypus! Sam also provided great historical insights and useful information about the areas we visited, including which hikes were best and we could do at Cradle Mountain with the time we had. If you’re on the fence about booking this trip, trust me—it’s totally worth it. 10 out of 10, highly recommend!

My wife and I were on a different 4-day Tasmania tour, and unfortunately my wife suffered a broken ankle while hiking on Day 2. She was airlifted to Hobart, and I had to find a way back myself. B prepared for a long car ride to cradle mountain but Sam’s van is super comfy and the stopovers are very scenic so it doesn’t feels like 4 hours at all. Over all, the trip was well planned and organised. The van fits 11 passengers, if you are into small group activities, this is perfect for you.

We still had a great time despite having the worst weather during our day-trip to Cradle Mountain. Sam is awesome and found ways for us to still enjoy the beauty of scenery. Sam's tour was quite 'eye opening'! We went to places close to Hobart that I would never have known about, who knew they made yummy spiced rum in New Norfolk?! This is a great combination of tasting and some history and great Tassie scenery, and a great finish at a yummy, conveniently located in Hobart craft brewery.

We got to see so much countryside, he took us through many cute towns and had great knowledge of the history in the areas. We got up to the Cradle Mountain National Park and despite the weather being too dangerous to do the usual trails Sam had a plan b walk for us to do. An amazing experience hiking through the mountains for 3 hours in the afternoon in amongst the snow! It was just a surreal experience! An amazing day without any of the stress because Sam had everything organised and planned. Thankyou Sam, highly highly recommend the trip to anyone interested!

San is an amazing tour guide, he is the owner of Derwent Experience. He's very accommodating and he took us on a very long journey to Cradle Mountain. Lunch and dinner in the chosen restaurants were superb, and he made sure we were all comfy and okay for the long journey. The tour started at 6am and we were dropped off back at Hobart at around 9pm. Cradle Mountain is very far from Hobart and Sam is the only tour provider that runs the day trip to Cradle Mountain, which saved my entire trip to Tasmania. Cradle Mountain is amazing, you wouldn't want to think twice about visiting this place. It is a must visit place if you are in Tasmania. We had about 10 or 11 people in the group and I was the only one that did the hiking up to the Marion Lookout. The view is breathtaking and wouldn't waste all of your effort at all. There was light showers and very windy as I hiked up, but saw rainbows appreared a few times up there. On my way down, I saw 3 wombats. If you have any breathing or walking difficulties, you could do a full circuit trekking of Dove Lake instead of going up. All the best Sam and thanks so much again for looking after us. It was my best daytrip in Tasmania!

Our tour to Cradle Mountain was one of my best experiences ever!! Cradle Mountain was breathtaking (Dove Lake 6.2 km walk). Sam, the owner of "Derwent Experiences", was a great guide and driver. Sam is kind, sincere and friendly. He looks out for the group, recommends good food places and even gives us some time to explore a little town during one of our restroom breaks!
Kudos to Sam for driving 6-8 hours to bring us to Cradle Mountain and safely back.
One area of improvement would be to speak through a mic so everyone on the vehicle can hear the commentaries.

The cradle mountain tour was truly amazing. Sam’s a really friendly and caring guide. He offered to drive to our place early in the morning to pick us up to save us an hour’s walk and dropped us at our doorstep at the end of the day. He also brought jackets and umbrellas for us unprepared hikers to brave the high altitude cold. Even though we had a long drive from Hobart, we were still able to spend enough time at Cradle mountain. We also got even more than advertised. We stopped at the Great Lake lookout for a nice view, a farm area to see an ox, and a secluded area at night to see the milky way galaxy! Great job on the tour Sam!

Great day with our guide Sam, from The Derwent Experience; from the New Norfolk Distillery where we sampled a variety of rums, gins and liqueurs, then a visit to Salmon Ponds, the oldest trout and salmon hatchery in the southern hemisphere where we enjoyed plump Tassie cherries and a soft sparkling wine, to a tasty cheese platter and selection of 6 wines at Stefano Lubiana estate, a sixth generation of family farmers. We then visited Richmond (quaint country town) and walked the oldest working stone bridge in Australia (built by convicts in 1823), then experienced the distillery flavours at the Charles Reuben estate who also produce three wines and we loved their Riesling and finished with a paddle of craft beers at the Last Rites Brewing Company (ps: only open on Fridays at this time). There was also little bits in between that added to the experience (like good local coffee to start the day, antiques and shops) plus Sam has good local knowledge, is friendly, easy, and great company. So totally recommend ; an unforgettable day… you must do it!

We took a group of 23 on the Derwent Experience and it was definitely a highlight of the week in Tassie! The Devonshire tea was delicious and so beautifully set out and croquet was great fun. The owners were very personal, they rustled up some gluten free scones in 5-10 mins and even shared their recipes with guests. The waterfall walks were stunning and so peaceful.

“Hobart to Cradle Mountain Day Trip”
Enjoyable small group day trip from Hobart to Cradle Mountain. It’s a long trip and well planned out by Sam with several rest stops and a breakfast and dinner break. His van is very comfortable. He provides lots of information and history about Tasmania along the way.
Cradle Mountain is fabulous. We took the hike around Dove Lake in 2.5 hours.
There are multiple trails of varying difficulty. We encountered very few people on the trail, it’s peaceful and beautiful.

B prepared for a long car ride to cradle mountain but Sam’s van is super comfy and the stopovers are very scenic so it doesn’t feels like 4 hours at all. Sam is the best driver in Tasmania and his van is absolutely comfortable. Although the tour was started at 6am, we slept very well while he drove the car for us.
He knew lots of interesting photo spots like great lake and ox farm. He was very friendly and explained everything about the tour(ETA, route, what's good at there) and answered every question we asked.
We were not native English speakers so we're not used to Aussie accents, but Sam spoke to us with clear accent and slowly so that we can understand well. The cradle mountain was so beautiful and wombats were so cute!

It was such an amazing tour. I was glad to go to Cradle Mt. from Hobart which was definitely a long trip. But Sam made it all possible! He was so nice and friendly, giving extra care to people who didn’t bring enough warm clothes to wear. He explained everything thoroughly before we started our hike to Dove lake circuit. “The ultimate Cradle Mountain experience”
We took the Day trip from Hobart to Cradle Mountain and had a truly memorable experience. Our tour host Sam was warm, friendly, knowledgeable and enhanced the whole experience. He promptly picked us up from our hotel at 6am in the tour van that was very comfortable and had usb charging ports for our phones.
We got on our way after picking up the last few guests and made very good time to Cradle Mountain with a couple of rest stops on the way. During our journey to Cradle Mountain and back Sam would enlighten us with information and history of Tasmania as we passed landmarks such as the Derwent Bridge, the sustainable logging areas, etc. So we also had an educational perspective to support the beautiful scenery.
Our first stop was a toilet stop at a beautiful historical forest site where Sam gave us some Tassie apples that were so sweet and refreshing.
We then stopped in at Mamma Bee’s cafe in Deloraine where a morning coffee and an egg and bacon roll with home made tomato relish hit the spot and fuelled us up for the day ahead. It was worth noting that the cafe’s sausage rolls looked amazing and were the size of a baby’s forearm and in hindsight I wish I grabbed one.
Onwards to Cradle Mountain and we did one more quick stop to meet Hercules the highland cow and Junior Hercules who was so cute.
When we reached Cradle Mountain, Sam was well prepared. He had extra raincoats of the tour group needed them, he sorted out our park entry and shuttle passes, parked the shuttle, and took us on the Enchanted Walk trail which was a 20 minute walk. We saw wombats and wallabies and drank the purest water ever straight from the Mountain stream.
Sam then took us up to the Dove Lake shuttle stop, took our group to the Information Centre and explained the various hiking route options that were available, as well as his route recommendations based on the weather conditions and the experience of the group members.
Sam then took our group to the Dove Lake Boat Shed for a group pic and then let us loose for 4 hours of doing our own thing. We hiked to Marion’s Lookout via the Wombat Pool and had a brilliant view over Cradle Mountain despite the wet weather and the hike was totally worth it. We then made our way back to the rendezvous point with time to spare and enjoyed some mulled wine and an open fire.
Once the tour group reassembled we the headed back to Hobart, stopping at the bush Inn Brewhouse in Deloraine for a lovely country pub style meal where our group bonded over our day together. Sam also had additional blankets and towels if anyone was feeling cold.
Sam had us all back at our hotels safe and sound by 9pm and his driving was as safe as houses. Thank you once again Sam and The Derwent Experience for a truly wonderful experience. This was the highlight of our Tassie trip and we will see you again when we return. I highly recommend and rate The Derwent Experience and note that it is the only day trip from Hobart to Cradle Mountain and back.

My family and I were able to explore Tasmania in a day thanks to Sam's trip from Hobart to Cradle Mountain, seeing all the snow, walking with the breathtaking view of Dove Lake, and also enjoying the natural beauty and local area of Tasmania along the ride. A truly amazing day trip to Cradle Mountain, it's a long day but if in Hobart take the day and go.We went just at the beginning of the off season,(today). If you want to see 4 seasons in one day this is the trip for you. Kate had her naked and afraid moment, the waterfalls and enchanted forest flooded over and she was afraid and by the end nearly naked in Sam's bus . We love him, blankets, apples, water, 4 ply and we stopped for dinner with a lovely warming
fireplace restaurant on the trip up and back. My only suggestion is bring extra clothes. No one will take better care of you than Sam. A job well done.

Recently I attended the first ever The Derwent Experience Mount Field Tour. All the members of the tour were Derwent Valley locals. Our driver, Sam, took us on an adventure that I will never forget. We stopped off at secret valley locations that many of us had never seen, ate an excellent genuine Australian pub meal at the National Park Hotel and came face-to-face with a grove of fagus on the slopes of Mount Field. We finished off with a cold drink around the camp fire at Left of Field.

Cradle Mountain itself is magical and incredible, and Sam added flavour with a few good stops for nice meals, watching the highland cows and showing us the Southern Cross on the clear-skied way home. I've had my share of tours in Australia and never had one as great as this. Sam is fiercely proud of Tasmania and genuinely enthusiastic about showing off the area, with engaging commentary (unlike guides who sound like they're reading a shopping list) and the perfect balance of quiet time and conversation. We felt well cared for throughout, with comfort stops and breakfast and dinner at local eateries, and the new, spacious vehicle made the long journey feel shorter. Dedicating my only full day in Tasmania to this tour was the best travel decision I've made.

I'm from Germany and, with a fully packed month visiting family in Sydney, I really wanted to see Cradle Mountain — but couldn't find a round-trip tour from Hobart anywhere, until I found The Derwent Experience. I didn’t think we’d get the chance to see cradle mountain in our tight schedule but Sam made it possible with his 1 day tour. We loved the drive through the countryside, the walk around dove lake was breathtaking, and the dinner by the fire in the country pub with our new friends on return drive will be remembered for years to come.
