Itinerary
Day 1: Adelaide to Ikara-Flinders Ranges (Thursday)
Coast-to-Cosmos
Your outback adventure kicks off before sunrise, leaving the city behind while most are still hitting snooze. After a quick caffeine crawl out of Adelaide, we cruise north to the sleepy town of Wirrabara. Here, towering silo art brings colour and culture to the streets and Julie’s Bakery serves up the kind of country comfort food you didn’t know you needed.
Next stop: Arkaroo Rock, tucked deep in Adnyamathanha Country. This is more than a hike, it’s a time machine. The 3.2 km trail weaves through native bush to a rock shelter etched with ochre and charcoal art that’s over 5,000 years old. These ancient markings tell the story of Akurra, the giant serpent whose body shaped this land. It’s raw, sacred, and completely unforgettable.
As the sun dips and shadows stretch across the ranges, we arrive at Wilpena Pound, our base for the night. Here, a local Yura guide welcomes us to Country, sharing stories first spoken in Yura Ngawarla, then brought to life in English. It’s not just a greeting; it’s an invitation to connect with the spirit of the land and those who have cared for it for millennia.
To wrap the day, it’s back to camp for dinner before rolling out your swag beneath the stars, where the Milky Way becomes your ceiling.
Accommodation: Swag camping with amenities at Discovery Parks Wilpena Pound
Meals: Dinner
Distance Travelled: Approx. 450 km
Day 2: Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park (Friday)
Wangara Views & Wallaby Country
After breakfast, we’ll strap on the boots for the Wangara Lookout Hike. Starting from the Wilpena Pound Visitor Centre, this 7 km return trail weaves through shady Pound Gap, where river red gums tower overhead and emus and kangaroos might casually photobomb your walk. You’ll hit the historic Hills Homestead first, a great spot to catch your breath. From there, it’s a short, steep push to the lookout. If you’re up for it, the upper platform dishes out panoramas that’ll blow your boots off.
Back on level ground, we explore Old Wilpena Station, where the outback grit of early pastoral days meets ancient Adnyamathanha Country. Back on the bus, travel to Hawker for lunch and a quick stop at the Jeff Morgan Gallery, part art, part time warp. Roll into Warren Gorge for a 5.2 km hike which delivers on drama: burnt-orange cliffs, cypress pines, and if you are lucky, a glimpse of the rare yellow-footed rock wallabies bouncing between boulders.
Set up camp at beautiful Warren Gorge for dinner, stories, and stargazing.
Accommodation: Swag camping at Warren Gorge (toilets available, no showers)
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Distance Travelled: Approx. 200 km
Day 3: Flinders Ranges to Coober Pedy (Saturday)
Salt Flats to Subterranean Sleepovers
Farewell the Flinders Ranges as we head deep into the South Australian outback. After a quick refresh and snack stop in Port Augusta, we cruise north through saltbush plains and wide-open nothingness, the kind that makes you feel like you’re driving on Mars.
Midway, we pull up at Lake Hart, a surreal salt lake where white stretches to the horizon and the silence feels otherworldly. It’s a chance to stretch your legs, snap some lunar-level photos, and breathe in the stillness.
By late arvo, we roll into Coober Pedy, the underground opal capital of the world. First stop? The Old Timers Mine for a crash course in outback bling. Learn how opals are formed, walk through original underground homes, and go ‘noodling’, fossicking for stray gems in the red dust. Who knows? You might just get lucky.
Check in to your underground digs at Radeka Downunder, where the rooms are carved into the rock to escape the desert heat. The night’s yours to explore this weird and wonderful town. Pizza in a cave, underground bars, moonlit strolls, it’s all on the table.
Accommodation: 5-share dorm at Radeka Downunder
Meals: Breakfast
Distance Travelled: Approx. 620 km
Day 4: Coober Pedy to Watarrka/Kings Canyon (Sunday)
Lunar Landscapes & Desert Skies
Buckle up, today’s a big one. We head north through a whole lot of red dirt and big sky, cruising past the Dingo Fence (yes, the world’s longest dog barrier) and into Kanku–Breakaways Conservation Park, an ancient Aboriginal heritage site where the Moon Plains live up to the name. Think wide-open space, sci-fi scenery, and silence that hums.
From here, we cross the border into the Northern Territory, chasing the heat shimmer to Watarrka National Park, home of Kings Canyon. By late afternoon, we roll into Kings Creek Station, our desert base for the night.
Cool off in the pool, wander the red dirt trails, or kick back with a cold one and watch the outback do its golden hour thing from the sunset platform. Dinner is at the Station’s laid-back eatery before we settle in for a well-earned rest under star-soaked skies.
Accommodation: Swag camping with amenities at Kings Creek Station
Meals: Breakfast
Distance Travelled: Approx. 770 km
Day 5: Watarrka/Kings Canyon to Uluru (Monday)
Rim Walks & Rock Stars
It’s an early start, but trust us, this one’s worth it. The Kings Canyon Rim Walk is straight-up legendary: a 6 km loop of towering sandstone cliffs, ancient domes, and mind-blowing views in every direction. Climb up through Priscilla’s Crack (cue the soundtrack), wander the maze of domes known as the Lost City, and descend into the lush heart of the canyon, the Garden of Eden, complete with ferns and secret waterholes.
After lunch, we cruise further into the Red Centre, giving your legs a break while your camera roll fills with shifting desert scenes. By late afternoon, we arrive at the sacred heart of Australia, Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.
Pull up a camp chair and soak in sunset over Uluru, when the rock glows and the desert hush hits differently. Then it’s back to camp for dinner before rolling out your swag under star-splashed skies. Red dust, Milky Way, total silence, this is your outback moment.
Accommodation: Swag camping with amenities at Ayers Rock Resort Campground
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Distance Travelled: Approx. 350 km
Day 6: Uluru (Tuesday)
Gorges & Culture
This morning, we head into the sacred domes of Kata Tjuṯa for the Walpa Gorge Walk. A 2.6 km trail into towering red rock walls and ancient desert silence. Named after the local word for “wind,” Walpa is a cool, shady pocket in the middle of the heat, home to rare plants, seasonal streams, and stories older than time. This is a sacred men’s site for the Aṉangu people, so we walk with quiet respect and wide eyes.
Before lunch, we dive deeper into the culture of this Country with a visit to the Cultural Centre, the heartbeat of the park, where you’ll learn more about the Aṉangu way of life and the meaning behind this powerful landscape.
Back at camp, the afternoon’s yours. Cool off in the pool, check out the Gallery of Central Australia, or join one of the free cultural experiences on offer, from bush food tastings to didgeridoo demos, guided garden walks, or meeting the locals at the Camel Farm.
Tonight, wrap up our Red Centre adventure in proper Aussie style with an Outback BBQ (own cost). Load your plate, share a drink with the crew, and trade your favourite trip stories as the desert sky puts on its nightly light show.
Feeling fancy? You’ve also got the option to skip the BBQ and upgrade to the magical Field of Light experience with 50,000 solar-powered globes glowing under the outback stars. This extra is very popular so we recommend adding this to your cart when booking.
Accommodation: Swag camping at Ayers Rock Resort Campground
Meals: Breakfast
Distance Travelled: Minimal
Day 7: Uluru & Yulara (Wednesday)
The Main Event
Wake early and watch the desert come alive as the sun rises over Uluru. The light show is unreal. Shifting colours, long shadows, and that quiet magic only this place can deliver.
Then it’s time to get up close. Standing 348 metres high and estimated at 550 million years old, Uluru is a presence. The 10 km guided base walk is your opportunity to connect. Wander past waterholes, into shaded gullies, and along ancient rock faces etched with meaning. Rest beneath Sheoak trees, peer into sacred caves, and hear the stories that shape this land. Prefer a slower pace? No worries, shorter walks are available too.
By late morning, we return to Desert Gardens Resort in Yulara, where this wild journey officially ends.
For those departing from Uluru Airport, complimentary transfers are available from the resort. There are also bus transfers from Yulara to Alice Springs. See the Know Before You Go information below to learn more.

On tour we get equally as many males as females and everyone shares an enthusiasm for the out doors, nature, adventure and culture. Our tours are for those wanting to really explore and share the experience with likeminded travellers. Reviews
“highly recommend”
The trip from Adelaide to Uluru was fantastic! Our tour guide, Eli, was exceptionally responsible and reliable, always ensuring we arrived at each location on time and meeting everyone’s needs. I met many wonderful people along the way. I highly recommend it!
“Love it”
Absolutely incredible trip from Adelaide to Uluru, lead by Elliot! I chose the trip because of the stunning scenery and wildlife but I also really enjoyed learning about the aboriginal history and culture. All of this was lead fantastically by Elliot who made this trip very special. The knowledge and stories he has are fascinating and he worked tirelessly to ensure every one had the best experience.
I did this as a solo traveller and it was perfect for meeting people, with a wide range of ages in the group. Highly recommend this tour!
“Swags for life”
Had an amazing time on the trip from Adelaide to Uluru. The itinerary was full of interesting places and beautiful scenery for hikes. And sleeping out under the stars in a swag is definitely something I would recommend (#swaglife).
“Dont hesitate!”
We did the 8-day Adelaide to Uluru tour and it was an adventure! 5 out of 5 stars for the tour and 6 out of 5 stars for the guides!
If you seek a proper tour through the outback, this is the one! The tour brought us along the Flinders ranges, Oodnadatta track, Coober Pedy, King’s canyon, Kata Tjuṯa and of course Uluru. During the nights we slept in swags under the stars and during the day we did hikes, activities and traveled by minibus through the outback. As the outback is a big place, the bus drove us quite some kilometers, but none of that is an issue with a guide like Brendan who will keep you easily amused for hours with his colorful stories and endless knowledge of the outback, the universe, rocks, and many other things. He’s better than a cinema!
The tour activities included beautiful (but obviously early) sunrise hikes, visits to landmarks and viewpoints, scenic drives and much more. Altogether it gave a great impression of the outback as we got to see so many different parts of it and by camping get to experience it by night as well as during the day (rather than staying in a boring hotel with a soft bed and aircon - is that a good story to tell your family back home?).
All in all we had a great outback adventure with a great group of people! Will cherish the memory for a long time. Big thanks!
“perfekt!!”
“incredible”
I did the 8-day Adelaide to Uluru tour and Elliott as our guide, with a group of 12 wonderful, fellow travelers. It was amazing!
Every day brought new, breathtaking scenery and the experience was made so much more interesting by the very informative stories that Elliott had researched and shared on a range of subjects from Aboriginal culture, to colonial history, wildlife, geology and plants.
“A great way to experience the Outback”
Excellent way to see Australia in an authentic way and meet new people. Our guide Tom W was very knowledgeable, friendly, considerate and helpful throughout the 8 days we spent on the road together. As a small group we were well catered for and if we had any questions Tom was right there to help night and day. There was a good mix of driving, hiking and exploring local sights on our way north. The sights and experiences on this trip were exceptional and I feel grateful I got to enjoy them at such a reasonable price. I would definitely recommend this to anyone keen to discover the South Australian outback and the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.
“Spot on!”
Just did the 7-day Adelaide to Uluru trip and it was definitely an unforgettable trip! Our guides Alex, Lauren and Brendan went above and beyond for everyone’s needs. Learnt so much about the aboriginal cultures and the land (lovely bit of geology included). The food was amazing too, which I don’t think any of us were expecting but it was so so good! From the beauty of the national parks we visited to the moments in between like campfire stories and pub quizzes, everything was spot on.
“Memorable Outback Adventure”
It was an unforgettable experience from start to finish.
Our tour guide Hannah was incredible. She was extremely knowledgeable, worked so hard the entire trip, and shared so much interesting information along the way. Even as an Australian, I learned a huge amount about the landscapes, culture, and history, which made the journey even more special. Zoe also deserves a huge shout-out. She was an exceptionally hard worker and helped everything run smoothly behind the scenes. You could really tell how much effort and care went into making sure everyone had a great experience.
My favourite part of the trip was bonding with everyone on the tour, we had such an amazing group of people, and of course seeing Uluru at sunset, which was absolutely unforgettable. The itinerary, scenery, and overall vibe of the tour were amazing. I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting a fun, well-organised, and genuinely memorable outback adventure.
“above and beyond”
It was a fantastic swag trip from Adelaide to Uluru. All my dreams and more came true. Great group and cudos to our guide Hannah, who always had everything under control and went above and beyond.
“Great experience”
Greate trip! I did the adelaide to Uluru trip. Nice nightssky, awesome landscape, really great tourguide and good selfmade meals. Learned a lot about the nature and history from the places we went. Must do!
“Eventful time!”
Had a great time on the Adelaide to Uluru trip. We had quite an eventful time but Elliott was a great, level headed guide. This was my second trip with you guys and I would definitely recommend.
“Loved the swag”
Had the best trip from Adelaide to Uluru with such a fun group and tour guides. Elliot was a great storyteller and very informative and Henni was lovely and positive. Really enjoyed sleeping in a swag for the first time and would definitely recommend this tour!
“You rock!”
I did the Adelaide to Uluru tour and this was an amazing experience. I got to enjoy the versatile landscapes of the out back with it’s semi-arid climate.
Learned a whole lot about rocks, vegetation, history and Aboriginal culture by our super enthusiastic tour guide Brendan and later Emily.
They made sure we had very tasty meals also for the veggo’s!
It’s a great combination of hikes and an epic roadtrip trough the outback by bus with your new family from all over the world! The one thing that makes it even more special is sleeping under the stars in a Swag! So, if you like camping… highly recommend!
You will survive all the crazy animal’s, it’s most likely they will stay away.
You rock!
“5/5”
The 7 day tour from Adelaide to Uluru was great! Our tour guide Steve was amazing and very friendly and informative, we had a lovely group and everyone got along and had a lot of fun together. There was a lot of driving but the bus was comfortable and we saw new incredible things every day, and it was an unforgettable experience to camp out under the stars. Would definitely recommend this tour!
“time of our lives”
My friend and I just completed the 8 day Adelaide to Uluru tour and had the absolute time of our lives. Our guide Scruffy was amazing – he was so funny and filled with so much knowledge - I learnt so much on this trip. We all learnt about wildlife, flora and fauna, Australian history and so much more. The trip was filled with so many fun activities. We did the best hikes I’ve ever done, I saw the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets and we visited some of the most unique places – destinations I’ll never forget. The guides were so attentive and kind, the food was phenomenal and all dietaries were well catered for. I felt well cared for throughout the entire trip and any nerves I had at the start disappeared by the end of day one with just how much comfort the guides provided us with. Couldn’t recommend this trip more ! I will thoroughly miss falling asleep each night under a sky full of stars.
“Legendary”
Did the Adelaide to Uluru trip. Super fun experience with lots of activities to do. Would definitely recommend. Shout out to Tom, driver, mechanic, cook, tour guide, musician and absolute legend overall!
“Adventure!”
We had an absolute blast on the „Adelaide to Uluru“-tour!!! We had a fun group from all over and with mixed ages. Our tourguide Dan made sure everyone had a good time (and was safe), he‘s fun to be around and VERY knowledgable about wildlife, aboriginals and aussie-culture. When things didn’t went according to plan Dan stayed calm and fixed the situation.
We saw heaps of wildlife and got great informations about flora and fauna along the way. The hikes were rather easy if you‘re medium fit, but be prepared for the heat - we were lucky with very moderate temps in December.
see ya all in Kakadu with Johnny!
“Outback Adventure!”
Our group and our guide Eli were amazing and we had a lot of fun. The tour was a perfect mix between culture, nature and adventure and we would for sure recommend the tour. It was one of our highlights in Australia.
“Would do again!”
The 8-day Adelaide to Uluru Trip with our amazing tourguide Brendan (and later Emily) and a motivated and fun group of 14 international people of all ages was a more than perfect experience!
Sleeping under the twinkling stars of the outback, rolling swags in the morning and being excited to get up early for great sunrise hikes through rocks and forest areas, having great talks along the way and enjoying so much good food (even selfmade pasta!), made this tour unforgettable, as well as relaxing hours of driving in the bus with so many interesting and fun talks from our tourguide about nature, solar-system, more nature, aboriginal culture, trees, rocks, australian history, discoverers, and much, much more - always underlined with great music or illustrations!
If you fancy a camping experience with "the journey being even more rewarding than the destination" - pack your backpack and join Lost In Australia for a tour!
I would definately do it again!
“Very well organised”
A well-organized tour with many stops from Adelaide to Uluru. We were lucky to be a very small group; Hannah guided us safely through the long days and shared her extensive knowledge. Thank you!
“Exceptional”
While the journey was unforgettable, there are several factors to consider. Our guides, Dan and assistant Marianne, were exceptional—knowledgeable, friendly, and dedicated to ensuring our safety and enjoyment. The activities, including visits to national parks and wildlife encounters, were extraordinary and stand out as highlights of my Australian experience. However, February’s temperatures were extreme, with daytime highs reaching up to 43°C (109.4°F) , making nights uncomfortable for sleeping. The necessity of rising at 5:30 or 6:00 AM to avoid the midday heat added to the trip’s demands. Additionally, the camping arrangements involved sleeping in swags under the open sky, which, while immersive, may not suit those seeking comfort. Hygiene facilities were basic; washing dishes in shared water was less than ideal. This trip is physically demanding and requires mental preparation for the heat and rustic conditions. Despite these challenges, the experiences were an unforgettable adventure.
“Excellent”
“Once in a lifetime”
I did the 8 day trip from Adelaide up to Uluru. Elliot is amazing with every up and down we had he was smiling and happy to help anyway possible. Also his knowledge and the stories he told us about everything was great. This trip was amazing the activities you do and what you see is unforgettable.
“a great trip”
We took the trip from Adelaide to uluru and had the best time ever! 8 days with the best group imaginable and the best guide ever. Elliot knew everything about Australia and had so many stories and random facts to share with us. Our assistant guide Henni was so positive and lovely the whole trip and made the whole trip run so smoothly. We learnt so much about aboriginal culture from aboriginal people on various guided walks. We will not forget this trip for the rest of our lives, couldn’t recommend it more!
“Adelaide to Uluru 8 day tour”
“Awesome!”
The group was small, only 12 participants, and the tour guide Dan was excellent. It never scared us away, we discovered many wild animals along the way, and always given enough time for photos. Very cool guy! Only the office still has deficits in handling complaints. Because of incorrect information, I had to book an additional flight and wasted €200 on the original flight. Unfortunately no feedback on this. The tour itself is awesome!
“Perfect!”
I had an amazing trip from Adelaide to Uluru with this company. Our guides Hanah, Ian and Zoe were fantastic. Everything was perfect!
